這部電影是由著名的百老匯舞台劇所改編拍攝，內容是描述蘇聯境內一群猶太人的遭遇。

本片之所以永垂不朽，應該歸功於全劇優美的音樂。原作曲者是 Jerry Bock，搬上銀幕後的音樂則由約翰威廉斯( John Williams )負責改編及指揮。約翰威廉斯後來陸續為許多著名電影譜寫出動人的樂章，如「星際大戰系列」、「大白鯊」、「第三類接觸」、「外星人」、「辛德勒的名單」等，成為電影配樂大師，「屋頂上的提琴手」電影原聲帶可說是他初試啼聲之作。

這首歌在電影原聲帶中的歌詞，和後來雷康尼夫合唱團演唱的版本有一段不一樣，本歌詞是以電影原聲帶為準。由於這首歌在電影中是由多人輪唱，故光看歌詞，會覺得最後一段的詞意不連貫。
