Defensive Swimming in White Water

As shows in the cited video, on your back (arch a bit & relax), facing downstream with your toes to the surface, and try to make yourself float on the surface. Unless the speed of flow is high that you won't be able to spread your arm like what you see in the video, then use your arms to balance yourself & control the direction. Make sure to see your toes! This is very critical, by doing so, you basically avoid foot entrapment which is very dangerous in the flowing water. So, never try to stand up in the river.

On your back facing downstream: you can see what's coming from the downstream.

Keep the toes to the surface to avoid your feet being snagged by anything at the bottom of the river and you can use the feet to absorb the blow of the rock and push yourself away from rocks.

While flowing on the surface employing defensive swimming, feel the water around you and the rhythm of the flow to adjust your breath. Look forward, when you expect any fall, take deep breath and be prepared that your head might be submerged in the water. Keep yourself away from any big rock, specially those undercut ones, and strainers. (A strainer is made up of a tree or collection of trees, branches, and debris in the water that has collected along the bank or against bridge abutments.)

Aft watching this video on defensive swimming, then you may want to watch this documentary video to see how other people negotiated various kinds of situation on swift water. https://youtu.be/i2V4U4iVukU
